Affiliate Marketing is one of the broadest forms of advertising on the internet today. Take a look at any offer’s traffic restrictions and you’ll get a pretty good idea of just how ambiguous affiliate marketing can be. Where else on the internet will you find marketing campaigns that can be promoted through search, banner, e-mail, and contextual methods? With its versatility, the affiliate marketing umbrella can really cloud transparency. Transparency’s role in this industry is critical. It’s the difference between good campaigns and great campaigns—and sometimes, between great campaigns and horrible campaigns.
Transparency is, however, tough to come by in this niche—mostly because affiliate marketing is such a small sector. With so much competition in such a niche industry, the secret to success tends to spread quickly once it’s out. No one wants anyone else to know where they’re promoting an offer or what keywords they’ve dialed in for a specific vertical.
While this system works great for individual entities, many great gains are possible by collaborating, not competing.
As an affiliate manager, I find most affiliates are reluctant to disclose how they’re promoting an offer, or what keywords they might be using in fear that I’ll go and tell the next affiliate all their secrets. In my experience speaking with different affiliates, I find can help determine the best mode for running an offer through an effective exchange of ideas, without ever getting too specific. The more collective knowledge we share as an industry, the more efficient the affiliate marketing eco-system can become.
Trade shows and meet-ups are great examples of the positivity that come with transparency. A dialogue among affiliates consisting of shared tips and tricks results in an educated, efficient affiliate base which in turn results in more efficient, productive networks. Furthermore, efficient networks bring in bigger ad dollars and more branded campaigns. In the end, it’s win-win-win.
But it all starts with being able to talk about campaigns.
